The world we live in has become increasingly noisy, and this constant din shows no signs of abating. Yet, if we truly wish to experience the depth of Christian faith, we must consciously create moments of silence—spaces in which we can declutter our hearts and minds from the distractions around us.

In today’s gospel, we see Joseph confronted with a situation that deeply unsettled him. On discovering that Mary was with child, he resolved to quietly withdraw. However, it was in silence and openness of heart that Joseph listened to the inner voice of God. That still, gentle voice revealed the truth—that Mary had conceived through the power of the Holy Spirit and was chosen to become the Mother of God. Silence transformed Joseph’s confusion into trust and obedience.

In much the same way, it is only when we pause and reflect in silence on our own lives—our successes, struggles, and failures—that we allow this inner voice to be heard. Over the past 15 years of our involvement in the ministry of teaching hymns at the Holy Cross Functional Centre, we have witnessed this truth unfold repeatedly. Each year, young men from diverse and often remote regions join the Congregation, drawn by a quiet but compelling call within their hearts. Despite their varied backgrounds, what unites them is their willingness to listen to God’s voice in silence, allowing it to guide their life choices.

Likewise, the Holy Cross religious through prayerful silence and discernment have been inspired to welcome and nurture these candidates. The transformation we observe in them year after year is remarkable, as they are prepared, in God’s time, for their vocation and future ministry.

For us, too, amidst the routines of daily life and work, we remain grateful for those silent moments when our hearts were guided to share our gifts of music and song. In doing so, we have been privileged to help these young students discover and develop their own talents.

Looking back, what stands out clearly is the work of the Holy Spirit in every one of these journeys. Just as Mary and Joseph were guided by God’s voice, so too are lives shaped when silence makes room for grace.

May this gospel inspire each of us to seek moments of prayerful silence, for it is there, in the depths of our true selves, that God speaks most clearly.
